Goddards - August 2004

Okay, so now we were hooked!

The next Landmark we tackled was Goddards in Abinger Common, Surrey. It was a joint hen/stag weekend for me and my husband-to-be but also a jolly good excuse to get drunk and be extremely silly with no-one around!! So, August Bank Holiday saw 12 of us descend on Surrey from various parts of the country (London, Kent, West Yorkshire, Warwickshire and Devon - to be very general about it!) I had received a detailed account of where the key was to be found and duly located it and opened the door to this....

Hmmm, not bad for a kitchen!

The rest of the house was duly explored by the first of those to arrive and we found a timbered dining room, complete with open fire;

a living room, with an open fire and a secret cupboard;

and the infamous skittle alley (hours of fun were had by all!)

I guess I ought to give you the Landmark 'blurb' on the property...

Facts and figures:

Built by Edwin Lutyens in 1998-1900 and enlarged by him in 1910. The garden was laid out in collaboration with Gertrude Jekyll. Originally built as a 'Home of Rest to which ladies of small means might repair for holiday'. The original building comprised of: a central common room (now the dining room) another common room on the first floor (now a corridor joining the two wings and housing two bedrooms and two bathrooms) two cottages in either wing, the Southern one having a skittle alley. The house was given to the Lutyens Trust in 1991 by Mr and Mrs Hall, who had owned it since 1953. The Trust now lease the property to the Landmark Trust and it is rented out as holiday accommodation.

Part of the ground floor and garden are open to the public on Wednesdays (by appointment) between Easter and October
